Corn for Fish is a musical created by Giacomo Scalisi and artists Arantxa Joseph (Voice, percussion and dance) and André Duarte (Voice, ballafon, n'goni, guitar, electric bass and percussion).
Inspired by the tradition of story-telling through singing, or singing a story, it recounts a tale told on the west coast of Africa, in the Republic of Togo. The muscial tells us about a secret that Kudjo's grandfather and Kudjo's grandfather’s grandfather passed down from generation to generation.
They, fishermen, knew that if they sang while they worked, everything would seem less arduous. So when they arrived by boat to their fishing spot, they would sing with great enthusiasm and magic would happen; the fish seemed to hear them and came to the boat in huge shoals...
This is a show that contributes towards global citizenship as it promotes the universality of cultures. The musical performance ends with a sampling of the typical "xerém algarvio", served at sunset.
Xerém itself (a corn flour-based dish) is a result of the miscegenation of cultures where Portuguese is spoken, found in Portugal (Algarve), Cape Verde and Brazil. The Xerém served is a partnership with the Mexilhão Restaurant (Vila do Bispo) and includes organic rosé wine tasting from Monte da Casteleja.
